Cambridge NCT

Alison Marcus,
Branch Chair, Cambridge NCT 2007-2009

I am delighted to write this open letter of reference for Elizabeth Weston (Liz) who is re-establishing her career after taking a short break to have her two children.I have known Liz for three years, first as her antenatal teacher, and then as a friend and fellow volunteer in the Cambridge branch of the NCT (National Childbirth Trust) of which I am Chair.

On a personal level, Liz has been a sensitive and caring friend to me.  However, she has also been a source of inspiration with her enthusiasm and boundless energy!

On a professional level, Liz is the advertising manager for our quarterly magazine; a role which she has performed with great efficiency.  Upon taking up the role, she demonstrated her powers of critical thinking, creativity and marketing skills by performing a cost analysis and review of our advertisers needs which enabled her to design a set of advertising packages that coupled with her advertiser’s recruitment campaign has resulted in our magazine breaking even.  All of this, she achieved as a volunteer with a small baby in tow, which is testimony to her self motivation and ability to work independently.

Alongside the above, she has also spearheaded the planning and design of our next major fundraising event, a baby show to be held in the autumn of 2009 (which was her idea).  Recognising the scale of the project and by both inspiring and enthusing individuals from within the NCT and outside she has created a large team of volunteers to organise the event and has been careful to match each persons skills to the tasks required.  This is a real testimony to her interpersonal skills.

I have always been impressed with Liz’s ability to think about a wide variety issues in an objective yet insightful manner.  She is fair minded and able to view things from other people’s perspectives as well as her own.  For example, while negotiating support for our forthcoming Baby show from John Lewis, it became clear that John Lewis wanted to do more to directly help mothers and babies and it was entirely Liz’s idea to start a series of breastfeeding workshops facilitated by a partnership between Cambridge NCT and John Lewis.  During this time it was evident to me that she was a real team player as she worked alongside our specialist workers and John Lewis management to ensure a comfortable environment for the mothers without compromising the John Lewis’ staff security.

To summarise, Liz is an excellent project manager with all the skills that requires: she is analytical, clear thinking, hard working, committed to the task in hand and diplomatic. She is a natural leader and able to be a real team player, but has the motivation and confidence to work alone.  But most importantly she is an honest and lovely person.  I have no hesitation in recommending her to you.
